See What’s New at the 2024 ICSC Meeting
Whether you are a long-time attendee of the International Congress of Scleral Contacts (ICSC) or you’re thinking about checking it out this year for the first time, you won’t be disappointed.
THE ICSC DOWNLOAD
During the 2-day ICSC conference, attendees can expect to learn about upcoming scleral technologies, side effects of scleral lens wear, novel scleral lens uses, practice marketing tips, and more. Additionally, vendor-supported wet labs offer the opportunity to learn new fitting tips, evaluate lenses and devices, and meet and interact with exhibitors to learn about their products and services. Here’s a quick highlight of the meeting to fill you in.
THEn & now
ICSC was the brainchild of Nathan Schramm, OD, CNS, FSLS, and Tom Arnold, OD, FSLS, who partnered with Bryn Mawr Communications (BMC; publisher of Modern Optometry) and BMC’s events team to put together the inaugural meeting.
ICSC was founded to help experienced scleral lens fitters hone their skills, and has grown each year. The meeting, which offers optometric continuing education credit (COPE approval pending), now includes 4 hours of simultaneous tracks tailored to experience level to accommodate those interested in scleral lenses, but with little to no experience with them. The Masters Track offers advanced information for experienced practitioners wishing to refine and expand their scleral lens knowledge, while the Foundations Track is geared toward practitioners in the early stages of scleral lens fitting.
In 2019, Melissa Barnett, OD, FSLS, FAAO, FBCLA, joined Dr. Arnold as co-chair of the meeting (Figure), and in 2023, ICSC formed a partnership with YoungOD Connect, a membership-based community and educational platform to help new and soon-to-be optometrists practice the highest level of optometric care. That partnership continues this year, and ICSC is extending an exclusive offer to 10 members of YoungOD Connect to attend the 2024 ICSC meeting.

Meeting registration includes access to all education sessions and workshops, as well as breakfasts and lunches, plus appetizers and drinks during the Friday exhibitor reception.
WHAT’S NEW?
This year, we’re shaking things up a bit. ICSC will be led by two new program chairs (Brooke Messer, OD, FAAO, FSLS, and John Gelles, OD, FIAO, FCLSA, FSLS, FBCLA) and, rather than take place in Fort Lauderdale at the end of July, the meeting will be held in San Diego, May 10-11, 2024, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront.
