Teri K. Geist, OD, who practices at Midwest Eye Care in Nebraska, was named the 106th president of the AOA. Dr. Geist shared her thoughts with Modern Optometry on the future of optometry, as well as her goals as AOA president:
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
“...New technologies, including AI, will become increasingly important tools to enhance patient care, and ODs should be prepared to evaluate and adopt innovations that improve outcomes, while maintaining the clinical judgment and personal relationships that define the profession," she explains.
Dr. Geist adds that of equal importance is advocacy for the profession, with every OD having the opportunity to support efforts that advance patient access through legislative and regulatory progress.
“Advocacy is one of the most meaningful investments doctors of optometry can make in the success of their practices and the future of the profession,” she stresses.
She encourages optometrists to become AOA members, participate in state and federal advocacy events, and stay informed on issues affecting the profession.1 Dr. Geist also suggests contacting policymakers, building relationships with elected officials, and supporting candidates who understand the importance of optometric care.

GOALS FOR THE PRESIDENCY
“My main goal is for doctors of optometry to feel engaged in our shared mission,” she stresses. “When we work together, through advocacy, volunteerism, and collaboration, we strengthen our collective voice and, ultimately, improve care for the patients we serve.”
Her related goals: advancing advocacy at every level so patients, policymakers, and healthcare leaders recognize doctors of optometry as essential, primary eyecare providers.
“No one advances the profession alone. Whether we're advocating for legislation, mentoring students, or improving patient care, lasting progress comes from people working together toward a common goal,” she points out. “That's the collaborative approach I'll bring to my presidency.”
