The International Congress of Scleral Contacts

As the epic year of 2020 fades into the past, we are excited and motivated to enhance our skills and embrace a bright future.

The global interest in scleral lenses is tremendous. Although there was a pause in 2020, we are still invigorated from the July 2019 International Congress of Scleral Contacts (ICSC) meeting. That meeting was truly inspirational and international. The ICSC welcomes both scleral lens experts and beginners and features presentations by leaders in the field. At the 2019 meeting, delegates from 15 countries participated in the 2-day meeting devoted solely to scleral lenses.

Key opinion leaders from all over the world, such as scleral lens visionaries Donald F. Ezekiel, AM, Dip Opt (WA), DCLP, FACLP, FAAO, and Kenneth W. Pullum, BSc, FCOptom, DipCLP, presented lectures that generated informative, interactive follow-up discussions. Topics included fenestrations and channels in scleral lenses, quadrant-specific base curves within the scleral lens optic zone, use of bevacizumab (Avastin, Genentech) for the treatment of corneal neovascularization, and incorporation of higher-order aberrations into scleral lenses.

Past speakers of note include Greg DeNaeyer, OD, FAAO; Lynette K. Johns, OD, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA; Jason Jedlicka, OD, FAAO; Daddi Fadel, OD, FSLS; Muriel Schornack, OD; and Langis Michaud, OD.

In 2021, we have invited experts from Netherlands, South Africa, Brazil, and Spain. At this point, travel plans are still fluid, but we hope to welcome these distinguished colleagues, among others.

The popularity of scleral lenses is colossal, and it continues to grow. As demonstrated each year at ICSC, the passion, expertise, and interest of scleral lens practitioners are extraordinary, as is the future of scleral lenses. We are in a historic phase of scleral lens growth. ICSC meetings are top-notch and have offered best practices for patients, practitioners, and industry. We personally invite you to participate in ICSC 2021.
