Zeiss will showcase its latest advancements in cataract and corneal refractive surgery at the upcoming European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) conference, taking place from September 6-10 in Barcelona, including the introduction of hyperopia treatment using lenticule extraction with SMILE pro, marking a first for CE markets.

At ESCRS, Zeiss will present its full Corneal Refractive Workflow, which now includes enhancements like computer-assisted cyclotorsion adjustment for the Visumax 800, remote planning via the Zeiss Refractive Workplace, and the Visulyze clinical nomogram and data analysis tool.

Zeiss is also celebrating a significant milestone, having surpassed 10 million lenticule extraction procedures performed with Zeiss SMILE and Zeiss SMILE pro. This achievement underscores the global adoption and trust in Zeiss' technology, which was first introduced commercially in 2011.

The company will present new research findings at ESCRS, including data from a post-market clinical follow-up study involving 237 patients treated with Zeiss SMILE pro. The study highlights the efficacy, predictability, safety, and stability of this treatment method for hyperopic astigmatism.

Introducing Advanced Ophthalmic Microscopes

In addition to its refractive surgery innovations, Zeiss will introduce its latest optical and digital ophthalmic microscopes to the CE markets. The Zeiss Artevo 850 3D heads-up microscope and the new Artevo 750 model will be on display, featuring enhanced digital visualization technologies that improve surgical workflow efficiency and outcomes.

The Artevo 850, in particular, offers true color imaging and increased depth of field, while the Artevo 750 introduces advanced optical visualization with new RGB LED illumination and higher resolution data overlays. Both devices are CE and FDA cleared and available in major markets.

Enhancing Cataract Surgery with AI and New IOLs

Zeiss is also advancing cataract surgery with its enhanced IOL portfolio, including the AT Elana 841P trifocal IOL, which will be highlighted at the conference. Clinical results demonstrating excellent visual outcomes with this IOL will be presented.

Zeiss will also showcase its latest AI-powered tools. The Zeiss AI IOL Calculator, now CE-marked, offers data-driven IOL power calculations without the need for IOL constants. Additionally, the Cirrus PathFinder AI tool, pending CE mark, will provide enhanced pre-operative patient care by automatically identifying abnormal macular OCT B-scans.

"Zeiss continues to pave the way toward a future of truly personalized care through the development of some of the most advanced digital technologies and medical devices to meet the expanding needs of Europe’s leading refractive and cataract surgeons," said Euan S. Thomson, PhD, President of the Ophthalmology Strategic Business Unit and Head of the Digital Business Unit at Zeiss Medical Technology. "Using our latest offerings – including our Visumax 800 with SMILE pro, Cirrus PathFinder, and other data-driven AI tools – we’re helping surgeons improve their workflow efficiencies and patient outcomes."

Zeiss' latest innovations will be showcased at the ESCRS conference in Hall 7, Booth D23.
