User-Friendly Visual-Acuity Chart Shows Good Agreement With Existing Charts

The Runge near-vision card is user-friendly and shows good agreement with the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) and Snellen visual-acuity charts, researchers report, according to Reuters Health.

“The Runge near-vision card has been validated and has potential for improving eye evaluations in primary- and urgent-care settings by virtue of its simplicity, portability, and ease of use,” Dr. Dennis P. Han from Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, told Reuters Health by email.

The Runge card features three sequences of letters, with each letter across a sequence corresponding to a progressively higher level of visual acuity. It uses three letters per acuity level (versus five for the ETDRS chart).
