Study Targets Early Signs of Vision Loss in Diabetic Patients

The University of Houston (UH) College of Optometry is embarking on a study, backed by a $3.3 million grant from the National Eye Institute, to investigate the progression of vision loss in patients with prediabetes and diabetes. The study, led by Associate Professor Wendy Harrison, aims to identify individuals at risk for vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy.
The study will involve the long-term tracking of patients with varying stages of prediabetes and diabetes, analyzing a range of factors including blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol, along with detailed eye exams. The goal is to create a predictive model that healthcare providers can use to identify high-risk individuals and implement preventative measures.
