Robotic Cataract Surgery Using ForSight Robotics’ Oryom Platform Presented for the First Time at ASCRS

04/12/2024

Robotic cataract surgery using ForSight Robotics’ Oryom platform on a porcine eye was presented at the 2024 ASCRS annual meeting by David F. Chang, MD, marking the debut of this technology at a professional conference.

During his Charles D. Kelman Innovator Lecture, Dr. Chang discussed his experience using the robotics platform to perform a complete, remote cataract procedure. He presented a video of the procedure and discussed the future potential for this groundbreaking technology.

"This is the first time I'm showing a video of me operating on an animal eye, doing the entire procedure with robotic arms, while sitting at a workstation located 20 ft. away from the eye. The robotic arms were precisely mirroring what my hands were doing," Dr. Chang, a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco, said in a ForSight Robotics news release.

The Oryom Surgical Robotics Platform is being developed to amplify surgeons’ skills and to increase patient access to sight-saving surgery worldwide. Utilizing AI-based algorithms, robotics, and advanced computer vision, the Oryom platform has already completed dozens of full robotic cataract procedures (on an animal eye model).

The  company's Strategic Advisory Board includes Fred Moll, MD, (founder of Intuitive Surgical and Auris Health) and Rony Abovitz (founder of Mako Surgical and Magic Leap), and the Clinical Advisory Board which includes David Chang, MD; Vance Thompson, MD; Elizabeth Yeu, MD; Prof. Boris Malyugin, MD, PhD; Sam Garg, MD, and Modi Naftali, MD.
