Prof. Ramin Tadayoni, MD, PhD, a giant in the global retina community, passed away on Friday.

A respected leader, investigator, mentor, and educator, Prof. Tadayoni was the head of the ophthalmology department at the Fondation Adolphe de Rothschild and the Lariboisière and Saint-Louis University Hospitals (AP-HP) in Paris; a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Paris; and former head of the retina department at Cochin Hospital in Paris. He was also the director of the new French Institute of Myopia, and was currently serving as president of the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA).

The EURETINA Board released a statement on Saturday sharing the news of Prof. Tadayoni’s passing with its members.

“Ramin was a world-renowned visionary and force for good in the field of retina. He was a mentor to all who had the honor or working with him and learning from him. Perhaps mostly notably, he was a treasured friend whose loss feels immeasurable in this moment … Our grief is immense, but we know it is also shared across our community. In the months ahead, we will have time to celebrate and reflect on Ramin’s enormous impact on the lives of so many and in so many ways, but for now we mourn a wonderful friend, leader and colleague.”

Prof. Tadayoni was known globally for his research on retinal disease, vitreoretinal surgery, and imaging. According to a speaker profile[1] on EMedEvents, he was the author of nearly 200 medical and scientific articles, as well as many contributions to ophthalmology textbooks.

He was also active on print and digital education mediums, including serving on Retina Today’s Editorial Advisory Board and the long-time host of BMC’s Clinical Minute Retina.[2]
