Phoenix, Knoxville, Kansas City Stand Out for Retinal Treatment Opportunity in the US

07/06/2021

The Phoenix metro area has the highest number of vitrectomies per provider in the US, while Knoxville, Tennessee, stands out for above average annual intravitreal injection volumes per provider. Kansas City is set apart by its high concentrations of high-volume IVT providers, according to Market Scope.

These insights and more can be found in Market Scope’s new “2021 United States Retina Atlas,” which provides an objective, data-driven tool to compare retinal treatment opportunity across US geographies.

US ophthalmologists are expected to perform nearly 7.6 million IVT injections in the US in 2021. An additional 365 thousand vitrectomy procedures and 833 thousand laser photocoagulation procedures will bring the total number of procedures to nearly 8.8 million. Market Scope estimates that 28.4 million people in the US suffer from some type of retinal disease or condition.

The biggest metro areas of New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago account for nearly 20 percent of retinal procedures. However, on a per capita share basis, most of the metro areas in the Southeast and the South-Atlantic stand out as areas with a high concentration of populations with retinal diseases.

A more complete understanding of the potential for retinal procedures requires an analysis of population by age and health status, plus an analysis of the surgery centers and retina surgeons by geographic area. When these data are combined, a complete picture emerges of the overall US retina market opportunity by detailed geography.

The allocation of the population with retinal disease is calculated using the prevalence rates by age group from Market Scope’s comprehensive retinal disease model; we also consider the varying rates of adult diabetes throughout the US. The different procedure volumes and practice size are considered in the distribution of procedures. Retinal treatment opportunity is estimated with multi-factor criteria using Market Scope’s MedOp Index Analysis.

Many regional and metro level trends unveil the geography-specific opportunities for retinal treatments in the United States. Patient and surgeon profiles of a geography play a major role in shaping these trends.

For example, Las Vegas and Kansas City are similar in total population. However, Kansas City has a larger population with retinal disease, more retina specialists, and three times as many high-volume IVT providers as Las Vegas. These variances in patient and surgeon demographics cause Kansas City to rank 23rd in overall opportunity, while Las Vegas ranks 75th.

The “2021 United States Retina Atlas” provides a geographic analysis of retinal treatment opportunity and key demographic metrics in 85 US metropolitan areas. Market Scope’s proprietary MedOp Index Analysis examines market potential and provides a benchmark against other metros.

The “2021 United States Retina Atlas” was published in June.
