Oculus announced that its Smartfield perimeter has successfully launched aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to support research on Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS)—a condition known to affect astronauts’ vision during long-duration space missions.

The Oculus Smartfield, a compact and portable visual field analyzer, will aid researchers studying how microgravity influences ocular health and visual function. By capturing precise data on changes in astronauts’ visual fields over time, the instrument will provide critical insights into the mechanisms underlying SANS—insights that may ultimately translate into improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients on Earth.

According to Oculus, SANS has become a key focus of space medicine research, as prolonged exposure to microgravity can lead to structural and functional changes in the eyes, including optic disc edema, globe flattening, and visual disturbances. The Smartfield’s inclusion in this mission represents an important step in enabling objective, in-flight assessment of visual field performance, a vital measure of neuro-ocular integrity.

Selected for its small footprint, proven reliability, and operational efficiency, the Smartfield perimeter is ideally suited to the demanding environment of the ISS. Its compact form factor and intuitive workflow allow researchers to perform consistent, high-quality testing in the limited space of the orbital laboratory.

“The deployment of the Smartfield aboard the International Space Station highlights the growing role of advanced ophthalmic technologies in scientific discovery,” said Bill Tullo, OD, Vice President at Oculus. “We are honored that the Smartfield is contributing to such critical research aboard the ISS and that the device is playing a key role in preserving the safety of our brave astronauts. This milestone underscores our commitment to advancing vision care with innovative solutions—both here on Earth and beyond.”
