Improved Premium IOLs Will Drive Growth in the Global IOL Market Over the Next 5 Years

04/08/2019

Innovation in premium lens technology will fuel patient demand in the global IOL market over the next 5 years, according to a Market Scope report. The improved technology will provide better visual outcomes with fewer adverse tradeoffs. Market Scope forecasts that nearly half the projected $6.5 billion in IOL revenues in 2024 will come from premium IOLs.

The premium IOL market is expected to grow more than 10 percent in revenues in 2019, driven by the growing number of lens options, including extended depth-of-focus (EDOF), conventional, and low-add multifocal and trifocal models, which are also offered in toric versions.

RxSight is expected to launch the first post-op adjustable IOL in 2019, creating a new layer to the premium IOL market. The lens is designed to allow surgeons to make accurate postoperative adjustment of the IOL’s refractive power, giving surgeons greater confidence in providing customizable outcomes.

Market Scope’s new “2019 IOL Market Report” projects the evolution of post-op adjustable IOLs, including the eventual refinements that will enable surgeons to offer presbyopia correction, as well as customizable sphere and cylinder adjustments.

The firm predicts the impact that the next generation of shape-changing accommodating IOLs will play in expanding the premium IOL channel. The PowerVision FluidLens and LensGen Juvene have shown promising early clinical results. These IOLs hold the promise of a lower incidence of optical disturbances.

More than a third of cataract patients are left with significant post-op astigmatism, but just 4 percent receive toric IOLs globally. One of the main reasons for the infrequent use of toric IOLs is the lack of consistently accurate results.

Market Scope expects robust growth in toric IOL use over the next 5 years due to improvements in IOL designs, growing number of powers, and enhanced diagnostic tools to provide patients with better visual outcomes.

The “2019 IOL Market Report” focuses on changes occurring in the IOL competitive landscape and includes revised forecasts for all major premium categories, growth expectations for simultaneous cataract surgery, and analysis of other IOL enabling technologies.
