ForSight Robotics announced that Fred Moll, MD, the founder of Intuitive Surgical, has joined its Board of Directors. Intuitive Surgical is the company behind the da Vinci surgical system, the first robotic surgical platform commercially available in the US to be cleared by the FDA for use in general laparoscopic surgery. His appointment to the Board of Directors marks his first advisor role for an ophthalmology-focused surgical robotics company.

“Dr. Moll’s incredible legacy of pioneering the surgical robotics category perfectly aligns with our mission to transform the future of eye surgery,” Joseph Nathan, MD, MsC, ForSight Robotics’ co-founder, president, and Chief Medical Officer, said in a company news release. “As we look to bring the ORYOM Platform, the world's first platform for fully robotic cataract surgery, to market, Dr. Moll’s unparalleled expertise will be instrumental in accelerating our growth and shaping ophthalmic innovation.”

A distinguished and prolific medical device entrepreneur, Dr. Moll brings decades of expertise to the ForSight Board. He founded Intuitive Surgical in the 1990s, pioneering robotic-assisted surgery and transforming minimally invasive procedures across dozens of specialties with its da Vinci robotic system. He then founded Auris Health, which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2019. Most recently, he served as Chief Development Officer for J&J Medical Devices between 2019 and 2023. He has served on ForSight’s Strategic Advisory Board since the company’s founding in 2020 and is a current investor in ForSight Robotics.

“Throughout my career, I have worked with medical robotics companies to improve healthcare access and outcomes for patients worldwide,” said Dr. Moll. “ForSight Robotics is advancing surgical robotics in eye care, helping to avoid preventable blindness and address the global shortage of ophthalmic surgeons. Having supported the company since its inception, I’m confident in its team, tools, and potential to reshape the industry. I’m proud to continue serving as a strategic advisor during this period of significant growth.”

Dr. Moll’s appointment comes alongside the recent hiring of Yonatan Ushpizin as vice president of research and development and Ilanit Edri as vice president of people.
