Eyepromise Introduces Screen Shield Teen All-Natural Eye Vitamin for Screen Time Protection

03/22/2019

EyePromise announced the introduction of Screen Shield Teen to its premium EyePromise eye vitamin line. Screen Shield Teen is an ocular nutrition supplement specially formulated to preserve and support visual comfort and wellness for children ages 4-17.

The vast majority of teens in the United States have access to a smartphone, and 45 percent are online on a near constant basis. According to a 2018 Pew Research study,1 65 percent of parents say they worry that their teens are spending too much time in front of their digital devices, and findings from a separate independent study2 suggests that 69 percent of parents don’t anticipate any decrease in their children’s screen time use.  Nine-in-ten (92 percent) US adults and 71 percent of US children ages 6 to 12 experience symptoms such as tired eyes and eye strain from the use of digital devices.2

“The dramatic rise in the use of these devices has raised concerns about potentially deleterious effects of increased screen time exposure,” Joseph J. Pizzimenti, OD, FAAO, Professor at the Rosenberg School of Optometry at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, said in a company news release. “The ocular benefits of eye-healthy antioxidants like zeaxanthin and lutein have been known for some time.”

Research has demonstrated that supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin increased macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and, in turn, improved subjects’ headache frequency, eye strain, eye fatigue and other visual performance measures often associated with prolonged digital screen time.3

Based on doctor feedback and increased consumer concerns around eye and vision symptoms from device usage, EyePromise’s Scientific Advisory Board assisted the company in developing EyePromise Screen Shield Teen, an all-natural zeaxanthin (not synthetic) fruit-punch flavored chewable vitamin for children ages 4 and up. EyePromise Screen Shield Teen is GMO & Gluten free and is manufactured in FDA cGMP and an NSF Certified for Sport facilities.

“Getting daily amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin through your diet can help maintain good eye health,” Dr. Pizzimenti said.  “Most Western diets, however, are low in lutein and zeaxanthin, so daily supplementation with EyePromise Screen Shield Teen can help filter screen time wavelengths of light and support and maintain ocular comfort and wellness.”

“EyePromise Screen Shield Teen is formulated to be consistent with the eye’s natural 2:1 ratio of zeaxanthin to lutein, along with other ingredients proven beneficial for eye health,” notes Dennis Gierhart, PhD, co-founder of ZeaVision, the parent company of EyePromise, said in the news release.  “Importantly, these antioxidants eliminate the free radicals produced by blue light exposure on the retina, and help absorb that light, adding an extra layer of protection for young eyes whose macular pigment is not fully developed.”

EyePromise Screen Shield Teen is also designed to complement a child’s current daily multi-vitamin. It is not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease. For more information on EyePromise, visit www.eyepromise.com/doctors/.
