Electroretinography Added to AAO’s Diabetic Retinopathy Preferred Practice Pattern Guidelines

03/25/2025

LKC Technologies, a provider of functional testing through electroretinography (ERG), announced that ERG has been included in the 2024 update of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s (AAO) Preferred Practice Pattern (PPP) guidelines for diabetic retinopathy (DR). According to LKC, this update underscores the increasing recognition of objective functional testing as a crucial component in the diagnosis and management of DR, complementing structural imaging for a comprehensive patient assessment.

LKC Technologies' FDA-cleared RETeval device enables objective retinal function assessment without the need for pupil dilation, seamlessly integrating functional testing into routine clinical workflows.

“The inclusion of ERG in the AAO’s Preferred Practice Pattern Guidelines is a pivotal moment in eye care history,” Dr. Sruthi Arepalli, Assistant Professor at Emory University School of Medicine, said in a company news release. “As diagnosticians and treating physicians, we need an objective functional complement to structural imaging. ERG provides this, allowing us to detect early retinal dysfunction that may precede visible structural changes. This capability facilitates earlier intervention and more personalized patient care.”
