BVI announced the European market launch of the Virtuoso phaco-vitrectomy surgical platform, a dual-function system designed to meet the demands of both cataract and vitreoretinal surgery.

According to BVI, Virtuoso brings together technologies in fluidics control, vitreoretinal applications, ultrasound energy delivery, and system usability within a streamlined platform. Its footprint design optimizes operating room space while delivering control and accuracy.

“Virtuoso represents a significant leap in surgical technology, bringing efficiency and control to both anterior and posterior segment procedures,” said Shervin Korangy, President and CEO of BVI.

Designed for multi-specialty centers and high-efficiency environments, Virtuoso provides versatility for cataract, vitrectomy, and combined procedures. BVI says its integration with the company's portfolio of consumables and IOLs enhances its value proposition for surgeons and hospitals.

“Virtuoso has a very novel fluidics concept maintaining target IOP throughout ALL procedure steps, from phaco to I/A, uniquely fusing the control of a flow pump with the efficiency of a pressure pump. Also, the featured Load Sensing Phaco maintains the programmed U/S energy regardless of lens resistance—this may translate into enhanced energy delivery," said Tommaso Rossi, MD, Director of Ophthalmology at IRCCS Policlinico San Martino, Italy.

The Virtuoso debut will be featured at upcoming 2025 European congresses, including ESCRS and Euretina, with abstracts accepted into the scientific program. Topics will include: Post-occlusion break surge, energy delivery consistency, vitrectomy probe stiffness, and aspiration efficiency.

Additionally, BVI has initiated a prospective clinical investigation at LMU Klinikum, Munich, led by Prof. Priglinger, to further validate the system’s safety and effectiveness.

Commercial rollout will begin in selected European markets, with global expansion following regulatory approvals.
