Belkin Vision’s New Glaucoma Laser Technology Now Available in Germany

02/21/2023

Belkin Vision announced that its Direct SLT Eagle device, an automated, non-contact glaucoma laser treatment, is being used to treat glaucoma patients at The University Eye Clinic in Bochum, Germany.

“The Eagle by Belkin Vision will be transformative for many of the estimated 900,000 glaucoma patients in Germany. Direct Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (DSLT) is comfortable and less invasive than established laser procedures for the patient, and with its automation, allows us to treat many more patients," Prof. Dr. Burkhard Dick, Professor of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the University Eye Clinic, Bochum, Germany, said in a company news release. "It does not require contact with the eye, and can prevent, reduce, or eliminate the need for eye drops."

The Eagle demonstrated a clinically meaningful reduction in IOP, with 70% of patients who received DSLT as a first-line treatment not requiring eye drops 1 year post treatment. A reduction in drops is also a key success factor in the treatment of the disease as they can often come with side effects and poor patient adherence [1].

Belkin Vision’s Eagle works by administering 120 laser shots through the limbus to the trabecular meshwork using a proprietary algorithm and eye-tracking technology. In addition to being safe and patient-friendly, the laser procedure is also user-friendly. Common laser procedures used to treat glaucoma require gonioscopy which involves direct contact with the eye. DSLT is performed directly through the limbus without gonioscopy, making it an extremely efficient, ergonomic, and precise procedure. Additionally, the device can be used by all ophthalmologists—not just glaucoma specialists—enabling more ophthalmologists to adhere to European Glaucoma Society (EGS) Guidelines, which recommend laser as a first-line treatment.

“This is a very proud moment for Belkin Vision. We believe the Eagle with its DSLT technology will make a remarkable difference for glaucoma patients in Germany, and eventually around the world,” said Daria Lemann-Blumenthal, Belkin Vision’s CEO. “We are thrilled to finally be able to offer accessible laser care for glaucoma patients closer to the point of diagnosis.”

The Eagle device received CE Mark in May 2022 and is the first automated, non-contact glaucoma laser treatment available within Europe. In addition to Germany, the device is being introduced to key markets in Europe in the coming months, including the UK and Italy. The device is not available in the United States.
