Aggressive Steroid Therapy Improves Visual Outcomes in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease
Aggressive treatment beginning with pulsed intravenous corticosteroids appears to improve visual outcomes of new-onset acute Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease, researchers from Japan report, according to a report in Medscape.
VKH disease is a multisystem disorder that includes bilateral diffuse choroiditis and serous retinal detachments, followed by anterior-segment inflammation and, if untreated or inadequately treated in the acute stage, progression to widespread bullous retinal detachments and other features.
“We were able to confirm a low rate of recurrences, supporting our strong feeling that VKH disease, if caught early and treated aggressively, will not become a chronic disease in the majority of patients (87.5% in our hands),” said Dr. Annabelle A. Okada from Kyorin University School of Medicine, in Tokyo.
