Cornea Health Diagnostic Tools
Part four of a five-part business/specialty care optometric series.
As optometrists, we’re familiar with corneal disease. Patients come to us with any combination of signs and symptoms, including eye pain, light sensitivity, foreign body sensation, blurry or worsening vision, watery or red/bloodshot eyes, and pus/discharge from eyes. The cause of these issues could be anything from infection, injury, genetic mutations, certain medical conditions, or other eye conditions.
Determining whether the patient in your chair is there due to keratoconus, keratitis, corneal ectasia, corneal dystrophy, bullous keratopathy, corneal abrasion, herpetic eye disease, iridocorneal endothelial syndrome, keratoconjunctivitis, or pterygium isn’t always clear.
We offer this EMPOWER: Business + Specialty Care Optometric Series to inspire optometrists with advanced knowledge and tools to elevate their practices and patient care. In each of the five parts of the series, two thought leaders tackle the chosen topic from different angles. The first three parts of this series covered corneal health and the relevance of specialty lenses; the optimization of contact lens wear; and the role of patient communication in building trust and a continuity of care. Additionally, the authors of each article appear on an episode of The MOD Pod to discuss their topics in further detail.
DIAGNOSTIC INSIGHTS

Paul Hammond, OD, FAAO, explains how these instruments changed the way he manages corneal disease, and Jason Compton, OD, FAAO, walks us through how he integrates diagnostics into specialty lens design and corneal rehabilitation.
We hope you find the information offered here useful and that it supports you in the continued growth of your practice.
