GLP-1 Receptor Agonists Not Linked With Diabetic Retinopathy

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) do not appear to increase patients’ risk for diabetic retinopathy, according to an analysis of the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System database, as reported by Reuters Health.

“Physicians do not need to avoid GLP1RA based on concerns of retinopathy,” Dr. Tiansheng Wang from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill told Reuters Health by email.

Previous trials have suggested that the GLP-1RAs semaglutide (approved late last year) and liraglutide might be associated with a higher incidence of diabetic retinopathy adverse events, although the trials did not systematically look for this outcome.
