We can tattoo just about anything now.

A new study published in Cornea examined safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction after cosmetic keratopigmentation.

What is keratopigmentation?

Keratopigmentation, or corneal tattooing, has been used for cosmetic restoration of severely impaired eyes. It has also gained popularity in restoring functional visual symptoms related to iris defects, such as colobomas, fixed dilated pupils, and in the treatment of diplopia.

Tell me about the study.

The study included 79 eyes of 40 patients, all with the desire to cosmetically change their eye color. All but one surgery was performed using the femtosecond laser–assisted intrastromal technique. The technique uses a femtosecond laser to create a circular stromal tunnel, which is eventually opened to the periphery of the cornea until the limbus is reached. The pigment is then injected through the superior incision.

How did the patients do?

According to this study, relatively well. The mean follow-up was 29 months (range 6–69), and the main side effect was light sensitivity (30% of patients). Other side effects included color fading, visual field limitations, and one person who previously had LASIK developed corneal ectasia. Patient satisfaction was termed “excellent” in 92.5% of cases.

How can I save money on my eye drops?

You know how patients compare the cost of their medication to liquid gold? Be a hero and introduce them to the Nanodropper.

The Nanodropper is a universal eye drop bottle adaptor that decreases the volume of oversized drops to reduce the waste and cost of eye medications.

The adaptor is an FDA-listed class I medical device that reduces the size of a typical eye drop by more than 60%, stretching the life of an eye drop bottle by several months. The adaptor easily screws on over the tip of most eye drop bottles.
